Property for sale in Thailand
An Overview of Thailand
Formerly known as Siam, The Kingdom of Thailand is one of the most fascinating, beautiful, diverse and exciting countries on earth. The Thais name for their country is Prathet Thai, translating simply as ‘land of the free’, and the warm hospitality unfailingly offered to visitors throughout Thailand seems indicative of a happy nation that, down the centuries of it’s massive history, has never been conquered by any invaders. The ruling dynasty is the Chakri, whose adored King Rama IX (full official name His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej), the 9th of the dynasty, has presided over the land for half a century. He and his family are beloved of the people to the extent that it is an offence to insult them, so doing so as a visitor (not that, surely, you would have reason to?) is far from advised!
Bordering Malaysia, Cambodia, Lao P.D.R (formerly Laos) and Myanmar (formerly Burma), Thailand comprises four very obvious geographical regions that are divided into 76 provinces. The north is largely mountainous and deeply forested; the northeast semi-arid farming country; the Central Plains are mainly flat, containing the majority of Thailand’s rice fields and paddies; the southern peninsula is spectacular, tropical coastline and sun-drenched paradise islands. As a whole, Thailand makes for arguably the most popular and rewarding country to visit in Southeast Asia.
The obvious focus of Thailand, and one of the world’s great cities, is the capital, Bangkok (Thai name: Krung Thep – ‘city of angels’). A colossal metropolis that over 7,000,000 call home, Bangkok is both awe-inspiring and completely crazy! The pace of life here is frenetic, the volume and speed of the traffic astonishing, but Bangkok cannot fail to electrify as you are presented with a blur of colour, a pot pourri of aromas and a travelogue of unforgettable cultural experiences. Compiling even a brief list of what to seek out in Bangkok is a fruitless exercise, as beyond the tourist trail the vastness of the city dictates that you have many unobvious wonders to discover.
Traditionally, the majority of visitors to Thailand head for the south. Considering the endless miles of palm-fringed, white sand beaches and scores of unfeasibly beautiful islands set amongst forests of limestone towers jutting from sapphire blue seas, it is easy to see why. Island destinations such as gorgeous Koh Samui, Phuket (see separate Resort Guide pages) and Koh Phi Phi offer an infinitely slower pace of life than the capital, and a playground of adventure and relaxation in endless hours of tropical sunshine.
But there is much, much more. There are the remarkable wats and ancient ruins of countless spellbinding historical cities to visit, such as in Sukothai, Chiang Rai, Kanchanaburi or Chiang Mai (see separate Resort Guide page), and leisure-driven resorts such as Pattaya (see also separate page) – all fixed in some of the most lush and scenic countryside on earth. So, a Thai experience can take many different forms: From the full-on, adrenaline charge culture shock of Bangkok and the major cities, to tranquil rural scenes; from the beach-based easy life of the islands to jungle trekking on elephants; from meeting the hill tribe people of the far north to standing in the shadow of a 40-foot golden Buddha: Thailand genuinely is an extraordinary kingdom of magic, mystery and wonder.
Thailand has always openly encouraged visitors to share their beautiful home, and is continuing to open up as regards property investment from overseas purchasers. Thai property is popular because although it is often constructed with traditional methods (such as using wooden scaffolding) and design principles, the end result is always a superb quality, excellent value home. More and more developments are springing up in some very desirable and diverse locations such as Pattaya, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and the elegant, Chakri Dynasty-endorsed Hua Hin. (Please see Resort Guides).
As a destination that has so much to offer the millions of tourists that visit Thailand each year, investment in property for sale in Thailand can only ever be a wise move. Whether intended for permanent or semi-permanent relocation, as a holiday home to be rented when you are not there, or solely to rent to tourists, a property in Thailand is an overseas property investment option that can bring excellent long-term benefits to the purchaser.
