Property for sale in The Far East
Property for sale in Thailand: Pattaya
The length and breadth of the country, Thailand
has an abundance of sights and experiences to
offer the visitor, but it is perhaps Pattaya – in the province
of Chonburi on Thailand’s
east coast – that is the consistently most-visited of all the
tourist hotspots. Each year, hundreds of thousands
of visitors flock to Pattaya (popularly known as ‘Pattaya Beach’)
in search of beaches, watersports and world class nightlife.
Originally known as Thap Phraya, and then Phattaya
(meaning, wonderfully, ‘the wind blowing from the southwest
to the northeast at the beginning of the rainy
season’!), Pattaya
was discovered as a tourist destination only
relatively recently: the rich of Bangkok visited Pattaya for relaxation
in the late 1950s,
but it was in April 1961, when around 100 Vietnam-bound
American servicemen kick-started Pattaya as a resort upon visiting
the town and loving
everything it had to offer. Word spread quickly
from here of Pattaya’s
exotic charms, and the former quiet fishing village
gradually transformed into a bustling tourist playground.
Around 147 kilometres from Bangkok, Pattaya is
home to just under 100,000 residents. Of those
of working age, a staggering 90% work in the tourist industry, highlighting
just how crucial tourism
is to the town. Since those American troops dropped
by and started things rolling, the town has responded by providing and
developing
every conceivable attraction and amenity to keep
tourists happily entertained and occupied 24 hours a day. The cherry
on the cake is
that everything is amplified by the natural factors
of beautiful beaches and scenery wrapped in a sultry tropical climate.
A great deal of daily activity in Pattaya revolves
around the beaches, as the resort is a magnet
for watersports enthusiasts. The constant sunshine, clear sea and fine
sand beaches provide perfect
conditions for swimming, water-skiing, sailing,
windsurfing, scuba diving and more. For the less aquatically-inclined,
there is still
a wide range of sports available that includes
tennis, archery, horse-riding, go-karting and bowling. Those that would
rather remain as spectators
can take in Thai Boxing tournaments in the town;
besides being a great sporting spectacle, the ritual and ceremony that
surrounds the bouts
also offers a dazzling cultural experience.
But it is the vast range of nightlife options,
excellent dining and shopping that also appeal
greatly to many who visit Pattaya. There are hundreds of bars, clubs
and nightspots catering
to every conceivable taste from the quiet, candlelit
and romantic to the trendy and loud where dance music pumps into the
early hours.
The scores of restaurants and cafés of Pattaya offer cuisine
to satisfy the most demanding palette, with Chinese,
Japanese, Mexican, Korean, French, Italian, Indian and, of course,
Thai food available
alongside less considered gastronomy such as
German and Russian. The shopping ranges from roadside stalls and open
markets to designer
boutiques, with prices often at a fraction of
what the same goods would cost at home. Excellent bargains in local
artworks, silks, clothing
and jewellery can be found all over this extremely
exciting resort.
If you have been considering investment in property
overseas with specific intentions to rent, Pattaya

level of tourism
that the town currently enjoys. If you are looking
