Property for sale in Thailand: Koh Samui
Simply put, Koh Samui is one of the world’s most beautiful islands.
At 247 square kilometres, it is the third largest
Thai island after Phuket (see separate Resort Guide page) and Koh Chang.
Situated in the
Gulf of Thailand off Suratthani on the east coast
of Southern Thailand, Koh Samui is an island of some 45,000 inhabitants
that has been an immensely
popular destination since the late 1970s, ‘discovered’ – as
is the case with many favourite Thailand destinations – by backpackers.
Around 60 smaller islands gather round it in the
Gulf, the emerald sea around which provide some of the best diving waters
in the world. It
all makes for magnificent scenery and a laid-back
tropical paradise where relaxation is all but mandatory!
Koh Samui has been inhabited for about 1,500 years,
initially settled by Southern Chinese immigrants
and Malay fishermen drawn to the teeming waters around the island. It
is thought that
the name Koh Samui originates from the word ‘saboey’,
meaning ‘safe haven’ but - considering this island yields
more species of coconut palm trees than anywhere
else on earth - it seems surprising that the name is not coconut-oriented!
Many head to Koh Samui simply to lounge around
on its beautiful white sand beaches, of which
visitors are spoiled for choice: Chaweng is the most famous, but Big
Buddha, Hua Thanon,
Lamai, Bophut and Choeng Mon are all exquisite,
trimmed with exotic palms. Beach life on Koh Samui is easy going, peaceful
and invigorating,
and arguably the chief reason the island is so
dependant on tourism. It is not too surprising that, as well as fishing,
another cornerstone
of Koh Samui’s economy is the coconut!
If you are able to peel yourself from Koh Samui’s beaches or
leave its warm seas, there are plenty of attractions and activities
on the
island worthy of investigation. Amongst the most
popular are swimming at the 80-metres high Na Muang waterfall, paying
a visit to the 20-metres
tall Big Buddha or the Butterfly Garden, bungee
jumping and go-karting. For the balmy evenings, there is an excellent
choice of well-priced
restaurants serving wonderful local dishes on international
menus, plus a few decent nightspots that are in keeping with Koh Samui’s
generally slow-paced way of life.
Tens of thousands of tourists flock to the ‘safe haven’ of
Koh Samui each and every year, backpackers still
leading the charge. If you have been considering purchasing property
overseas with the sole
intention of renting out your investment, then
Koh Samui property could well be an option to look at very seriously.
The flow of tourists is
steady, and many – especially families – will jump at the
chance of renting a beautiful private residence
for the duration of their stay. And of course, you can use your property
yourself whenever
you choose to spoil yourself with a well-deserved
break in paradise.
Property for sale in Koh Samui represents superb
value for money, and a very good investment opportunity.
